Pupil Premium

The pupil premium is money given to schools each year by the Government to boost the attainment of disadvantaged children.

It is based on research that demonstrates that children from families with low income often perform less well than their classmates.   Children who are entitled to pupil premium can face hurdles such as difficulty with language and communication, poor confidence and low attendance and punctuality. The pupil premium is designed to directly benefit eligible children and help narrow the gap between them and their peers.

Primary schools are given a pupil premium for:

  • Children in Reception to Year 6 who are, or have ever been, entitled to free school meals based on their family income
  • Children in care
  • Children previously in care who have been adopted, or who have a special guardianship order, a child arrangements order or a residence order
  • Children recorded as being from service families
